US English: Students practice words that are different in British English and American English.

Preparation

Preparation:

·                     Print out the worksheet and cut up into words and definitions.

Stages

Procedure

Intro

+/- 5 mins

  1.  Write two words on the board GAS – PETROL. Ask students if they mean the same or different, and if they are different, which word belongs to American and which is British English.

Word Game

+/-10 mins

  1. Divide the students into small teams. On the paper ask them to write two columns, one column with UK and the other US.
  2. Tell them they have three minutes to write a list of as many word pairs in UK and US English as they can.
  3. 4. When finished ask groups to swap and check their answers.  Teacher monitors as necessary.

Matching

+/- 20mins

 

  1. Give out copies of Worksheet 1 to each student/pairs and ask them to match the words to the definitions.
  2. When finished ask the students to check their answers with their partner/another group.

Word Revision

  1. One student says the UK word then throws a soft object (paper ball) to another student, they say the US version.
  2. Then that student says UK word and throws to another classmate who gives the US equivalent.
