If you have a large class, you will probably want to find ways to make sure all students have a chance to show what they can do in English. There are four main ways that a teacher can ensure all students have a chance to participate.
Firstly, you can use group and pair work. These types of activities can be noisy, but they give the students a lot of chances to practice and use English. They also allow children to build confidence in using English. It is easier to speak to one or two people in English than the whole class.
Secondly, make sure you spread attention around the class. Don’t always choose the same students; ask different students around the class questions. The children will learn that they must pay attention because they don’t know if you will choose them or not. You can ask easier questions to those who are not as strong as others in English.
You should also plan your lessons so that each class has a variety of activities. Children may have different learning styles, and if there are many different types of activities, all children will have a chance to learn in a style that suits them.
Finally, you can connect English to their world. Make the language that is used in class meaningful to the children. This will help them experience the language on a deeper emotional level, and help them remember. You can use activities that are personal, which can help children see that English is useful in the real world, not just the classroom. For example, if the lesson is about television, you can ask them what they watch on TV and what their favourite show is.
